Industry 4.0 - binder connectors for Industrial Ethernet

In the context of Industry 4.0, Industrial Ethernet enables fast, reliable and deterministic real-time data transmission between sensors, actuators and other automation components. Usually EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP or PROFINET protocols are used for this purpose. Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE) creates, with reduced effort, continuous TCP/IP data communication from the field level via the LAN of the control and process level to the cloud. Ethernet APL is establishing itself for universal and cross-application field instrumentation in process automation.

The binder portfolio includes a comprehensive selection of Ethernet connectors, including the M8, M12 and M16 product lines. The versatile M12 circular connector is not only used for sensor cabling; it has established itself as an industry standard for signal, data and power transmission in the entire factory automation and robotics environment. As Industry 4.0 and Industrial IoT continue to spread, the Industrial Ethernet product line will play an increasingly important role.

The most important differences to standard Ethernet

  • Surroundings:
Factory and process automation applications require rugged connectors and cables that can withstand harsh conditions, such as a store floor.
Industrial Ethernet connectors and cables are, depending on the protection class, designed for extreme temperatures, dust, electromagnetic interference, humidity, liquids and vibrations.
  • Wiring:
It must be protected by means of shielding and sheathing.
  • The connectors:
Robust interlocking mechanisms and careful shielding, grounding and filtering are required, as well as IP67 protection.
  • Bandwidth:
100 Mbit/s is the usual data rate in Industrial Ethernet – only a fraction of the gigabit speed commonly used in LANs. The reason is simple: transmitting process and control data to an industrial network requires much less bandwidth than streaming music or video.
  • The high stability and reliability:
Industrial equipment must be stable and reliable, as network failures can lead to a halt in production.
  • The deterministic real-time communication:
On the other hand, data transfer often takes place within a few milliseconds. In addition, in an industrial environment, the network must guarantee that certain events occur in a defined time window.
